Managing Stress this Holiday Season

It can be the most wonderful time of the year—but for many, the holidays can also be stressful. “Everybody is different. There are people that their stress comes from shopping or cooking or arranging things. There are people that the stress comes from seeing their relatives that they don’t want to see. There are people that their stress comes from being alone,” said Dr. Jacqueline Hidalgo, a clinical psychologist with Lee Health.

Regardless of the cause, if it’s important to develop healthy coping skills. “Every time you’re feeling overwhelmed, you have to think about what is it that you’re thankful for this holiday season? That will give you the answer to what is the most important thing to you,” said Dr. Hidalgo.

A few more ways to help you manage your holiday stress is to make a reasonable to-do list, try deep breathing exercises, and stay flexible with your holiday plans. “There are so many things that we can’t control. The higher levels of anxiety come from wanting to control everything,” she said.

It’s also a good idea to limit your alcohol if you’re feeling stressed or anxious. “Alcohol is a big emotion enhancer. In my opinion, if you’re angry, it can make you angrier. If you’re sad, it can make you more emotional. It can also trigger more impulsivity,” said Dr. Hidalgo.

And while it can be challenging, set a holiday budget and stick to it. “I think it’s important to know how much you can spend. To look at what expenses you have for the rest of the month, and to know really what your limits are,” she said.

Taking time to reflect on what’s important this holiday season can also help you overcome stressful situations. Just a few tips to help you stay positive through the holidays.
